Auto-Feed Riveting Gun Maintenance: Schedule and Fixes
How to Maintain an Auto-Feed Riveting Gun: Tasks, Intervals and Fault Prevention
An auto-feed riveting gun is not a complicated piece of equipment, but its feed channel is precision-made and it runs at a high duty cycle. Disciplined maintenance visibly lowers the jam rate and extends the life of the gun body and the wear parts. Every Antec machine is tested to 30000 consecutive rivets without a jam, and our long-term failure rate is about 0.3%. A large part of that record comes from customers who follow the maintenance routine. Below is a checklist you can put to work today.
For distributors and contract manufacturers, a single supplier with a full range shortens the purchasing cycle. The notes below cover auto-feed riveting gun supply and procurement.
What buyers who source machines, rivets and spare parts in one order should remember: maintenance tasks and intervals; key maintenance points by component; common faults and how to prevent them; how to make maintenance a habit.
1. Maintenance tasks and intervals
| Interval | Maintenance task | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Every shift / daily | Clean the nosepiece, jaws, rivet inlet and machine surfaces | Remove rivet debris, oil and dust; keep the feed channel clean |
| Daily | Check the air supply | Drain the filter, confirm steady air pressure, check hoses for damage and leaks |
| Weekly | Lubricate moving parts | Apply the specified lubricant to sliding and moving parts as stated in the manual |
| Weekly | Inspect the vibratory bowl / hopper | Clear foreign objects from the bowl; confirm smooth sorting and a responsive sensor |
| Monthly | Inspect wear parts | Check wear on the nosepiece, jaws and anvil; replace them promptly |
| Quarterly | Full inspection | Tighten screws, check seals and electrical wiring, verify the counter and the alarms |
Bulk orders are packed together, so the line is not waiting on a partial delivery.
2. Key maintenance points by component
Nosepiece and jaws. These parts touch the rivet directly. Some materials cause slight metal pickup, so clean these parts on a schedule before the buildup thickens and affects grip and the mandrel break. Jaws worn past the limit slip and fail to hold the mandrel, so replace them promptly.
Feed channel and vibratory bowl. After a rivet size change, clear the whole channel so mixed rivets cannot jam the tube. Keep the bowl dry and free of oil, and wipe the sensor face regularly so it does not misread a missing rivet.
Air system. Drain the water from the compressor and filter bowl every day. Low air pressure causes weak feeding and rivets that are not fully set. Keep hoses from kinking or being run over, and fix leaking fittings right away.

3. Common faults and how to prevent them
| Symptom | Common causes | Action / prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Rivet jam, rivet not fed fully | Foreign matter in the channel, mixed sizes, worn nosepiece | Clear the channel, empty leftover rivets after a size change, replace the nosepiece |
| Mandrel will not break / rivet not tight | Low air pressure, worn jaws, pull force mismatch | Check air pressure, replace the jaws, match the rivet to the machine model |
| Missed rivets, dry firing | Dirty sensor, rivet separation timing off | Clean the sensor, re-adjust rivet separation |
| Scratched workpiece | Metal pickup on the nosepiece, misalignment when positioning | Clean the nosepiece, standardize the handling routine, add a protective sleeve |
Specification customization is quoted with the machine, not as a separate negotiation.
4. How to make maintenance a habit
Turn "clean daily, lubricate weekly, inspect wear parts monthly" into a check sheet with a named owner. Keep wear parts (nosepiece, jaws, anvil) in stock to match your consumption, so you are not buying after a breakdown has already stopped the line. Antec supplies wear parts at cost on a long-term basis, and our team can visit your plant for maintenance coaching, operator training and fault handling; new operators can be productive after a short training session. For a fuller look at parts and after-sales support, see Auto-Feed Riveting Gun Repair, Maintenance and Parts Supply Guide.
5. Daily check sheet (ready to print)
| Frequency | Check items | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Before shift | Air pressure at spec, nosepiece and jaws clean, dry-run feeding smooth | [ ] OK [ ] Action |
| After shift | Empty leftover rivets, clean the gun head and rivet inlet, shut off air and power, tidy the feed tube | [ ] OK [ ] Action |
| Weekly | Oil moving parts, clean the vibratory bowl, wipe the sensors, leak-check hose fittings | [ ] OK [ ] Action |
| Monthly | Check wear on nosepiece, jaws and anvil; tighten screws; test wiring and alarms | [ ] OK [ ] Action |
Spare parts advice: keep 1-2 spare sets of the matching nosepieces and jaws on hand, scaled to your nosepiece wear rate, and double that for two-shift or high-cycle lines. If one part keeps failing (for example, rivets jam at the same position every time), stop the machine and check it - do not run it while it is faulty, or you risk damaging the gun body and the workpiece. For faults you cannot clear yourself, keep a video of the fault and call the factory; it shortens remote diagnosis considerably.
Common Maintenance Questions
Supply Q&A
Follow the daily, weekly and monthly checks in the table above. On two-shift or high-cycle lines, double the frequency of lubrication and wear-part inspection.
Shut off the power and air first, then take the rivet out through the inspection port as described in the manual. Frequent jams usually mean a size mismatch or worn parts, so call after-sales service instead of prying at it repeatedly.
Yes. Our engineers visit customers worldwide for troubleshooting, maintenance and parts replacement, and response times are set out in the service agreement.
The manual lists the recommended lubricant grade and the wear-part specifications, and we do not advise substituting other oils. Buy consumables directly from the factory at cost to avoid the wrong specification causing sticking.
